"How much does it cost to remove a tree?" is the most common question we get — and the honest answer is that it depends. Two trees of the same height can differ several-fold in price depending on access and what's underneath them. Rather than quote a flat number, here's what actually drives the cost so you can understand any estimate you receive.
What affects the price
- Size and species. Height, trunk diameter, and wood density all matter. A tall, heavy conifer takes more time and rigging than a small ornamental.
- Access and slope. This is often the biggest factor in the Tri-Cities. A tree a truck can park beside is far cheaper than one down a steep Heritage Mountain or Burke Mountain backyard where every piece must be carried or rigged out.
- What's underneath. A tree that can be felled into open space is straightforward. One leaning over a house, deck, pool, fence, or neighbour's property must be dismantled piece by piece with ropes — or a crane — which takes longer.
- Power lines. Proximity to BC Hydro lines can require extra precautions or utility coordination.
- Cleanup and stump. Hauling all debris vs. leaving wood, and whether you add stump grinding, changes the total.
- Permits. Where a municipal permit is required, there's a fee and sometimes a refundable deposit (in Port Moody, $75 plus a $370 per-tree deposit) — separate from the removal cost itself.
Ballpark ranges
As a very rough guide, small, easily accessible trees often start in the few-hundred-dollar range, while large or hazardous removals with difficult access and rigging can run into the thousands. Treat any range online as a starting point only — your tree's specific situation is what sets the real number, which is why we provide free, detailed, no-obligation estimates.
Why the cheapest quote isn't always the safest
Tree removal is dangerous work. A low quote can mean a crew without proper liability insurance and WorkSafeBC coverage — and if someone is hurt or your property is damaged, that becomes your problem. Always confirm a company is licensed and insured before work begins.
How to get an accurate quote fast
The quickest way to a precise estimate is good photos: the whole tree, the base, what's nearby (house, fences, wires), and the access path. With those we can often quote without a site visit. Learn more about tree removal in Port Moody, or request a free estimate with photos.
